It was about a year ago that I first shared a snapshot of GCpedia. Here’s an update.

Statistics
As of 28 April 2010 at approx 11 am, GCpedia consisted of:
- 43 632 total pages (including talk pages, stubs, redirects and such)
- 6675 pages that are described as “probably legitimate content”
- 11 646 files uploaded
- 3.27 million page views
- 224 486 edits
- 14 539 registered users
More or less, there’s about 3 times as much stuff — in terms of total pages, total edits and registered users.
File uploads have boomed — more than 4 times as many as there were a year back.
And lurking is up dramatically too — 4.6 times as many page views as last year.
Interesting that distinction between “probably legitimate content” and total content — I’d say talk pages are just as legitimate as “proper” articles in this environment.

Thanks for sharing these metrics! When I read it, it got me thinking… How is the success of the GCPedia initiative measured? Is it mostly about growth and viewership? Or is there something more? Do you know if things like search behaviour, usability, productivity gains are somehow quantified? How does the GoC know if the effort has been time and money well-spent?
Thanks for dropping by Molly. I don’t have the answers to those Qs, since I am but a lowly GCpedia user. From my personal experience though, I’d qualify it as a smashing success.
Why?
First, I’ve been able to connect with peers in my line of work and with similar interests, but who are in other orgs. Previously, I’d been limited to FOAF networking and making guesses using the Govt’s online telephone directory.
But more important is what I mentioned here – “GCpedia in particular has become a space for folks across the GoC who are in my line of work to share info. Tips, how-to’s, examples. Stuff I can borrow, copy, tweak and apply to my own work. And then share back to keep the cycle going.” GCpedia is full of stuff that helps me solve the problems I face in my own work, using the time-honoured copy-paste-adjust method. If there’s a big GCpedia measurement spreadsheet out there somewhere, I guess that can be marked down in the productivity gain column.
