The GoC Communicators conference, at the Ottawa Congress Centre, starts tomorrow.
I’m heading over for most of the day. Looking forward especially to seeing Mitch Joel of Six Pixels of Separation fame. (Aside: link is to his 100th edition of the podcast – sustaining the momentum for that long is impressive!)
According to the conference program, his keynote will be on the theme of his “Know Control in a No Control World” seminar:
How Social Media And Web 2.0 Is Changing Marketing, Communications And Advertising Forever… And What You Need To Know To Survive
In this half-day seminar, Mitch simplifies and demonstrates the many new channels of marketing, advertising and communications that make up Social Media and Web 2.0. We’ve gone from static websites to a participatory environment. Participants will learn about Tags, RSS, Blogs, Podcasts, Wikis, Consumer Generated Content, Online Social Networks, Unconferences, Virtual Worlds and the mobile space.
Yes, the shift from talking at our stakeholders to participating with them is a fundamental one. And it’s early days (for us in government anyhow!). While I really haven’t wrapped my head around it yet, I am liking how it feels so far.
It’ll be interesting to see what Mitch has to say. If his podcast is any indication, it should be a good talk.
Actually, I’ve only recently discovered the Six Pixels podcast (picked up the thread with #98). Here’s the very first edition, from way back in May 2006. Will have to give it a listen – it’ll be interesting to see the evoluation. One difference I see right away: unlike the current hour-long format, the pilot ran just a tad over 9 minutes!
Make sure to come over and say “hi” – also feel free to join us for a Geek Dinner Ottawa tomorrow night:
